The Gandhian Home Rule Campaign

The campaign for Indian Home Rule had extensive Quaker support but this was channelled mainly through the India Conciliation Group which, as its name implies, was primarily concerned with reconciliation and avoiding confrontation. Many Indian nationalists felt that this Quaker approach tended to weaken their campaign of civil disobedience.

A recent study by Sue Smith concluded that Quakers did indeed make a significant contribution towards Indian independence. Her paper has direct relevance to the Quaker choice between conscience, compassion or coercion in the Israel-Palestine conflict.
