![]() | The 1948 War was concluded by an armistice in 1949, with the "Green Line" marking the armistice line separating Israel from the Jordanian-occupied West Bank. The Line divided Jerusalem into East and West Jerusalem. It was never intended to become a permanent national boundary but it marked the de facto border of Israel between 1949 and the 1967 Six-Day War. In effect it superseded the UN Partition boundaries. In 1980 Israel annexed East Jerusalem to create a unified City. This move has not been recognised by the UN or by any nation other than Israel. An area close to the Green Line, known as the Triangle, comprising Umm al-Fahm, Tayibe and surrounding "Arab" villages, was originally assigned to the Jordanian side of the Green Line but, for military reasons, the Israeli negotiators were keen to incorporate the Triangle into Israel, and Jordan agreed to accept an area in the South Hebron Hills in exchange. Most of the present inhabitants of the Triangle are now anxious to retain their Israeli citizenship, and resist proposals to transfer the Triangle to Palestine in any future exchange of territory. Could the Old City of Jerusalem be declared free of weapons? |
