Anwar Sadat's Peace Initiative

In 1977 Anwar Sadat, President of Egypt, flew to Israel to speak to the Knesset and, through the Knesset, to the Israeli people and to the world. The Israelis responded to his initiative.

In 1978 Sadat and Menachim Begin, Prime Minister of Israel, shared the Nobel Peace Prize.

In 1979 a Peace Treaty was signed between Egypt and Israel. That treaty still holds despite recent political upheavals in Egypt.
