Water in Israel

Israel's water industry is not privatised. Resources can therefore be prioritised in the public interest. In Israel water is not subsidised. Its price reflects the full cost of extraction and treatment, giving all users a financial incentive to use water responsibly.

The following steps have helped to ensure the reliable provision of clean water -

• Desalination of sea water.
• Introduction of water-efficient crops, and seeds that can thrive in salty water.
• Treatment of urban sewage for use on crops.
• Cloud seeding to stimulate rainfall.
• Insistence on water-efficient domestic appliances, including toilets.
• Effective monitoring to detect leaks. Water meters are universal.
• Drip irrigation
