A "Smart" Boycott

A smart boycott overcomes some of the limitations of a limited boycott of settlement goods while stopping short of a full boycott of Israel.
The idea is to target specific offenders for exemplary treatment and specific outcomes, much as Barclays Bank was boycotted by the Anti-Apartheid Movement.
Organisations which profit from the occupation are not necessarily located in the West Bank. They may be in Israel proper or even in the UK. They would be unaffected by a boycott of settlement goods.
Objectionable Israeli policies, such as the expulsion of Bedouin from the Negev Desert, can take place on Israeli, as distinct from Palestinian, soil. Even the blockade of Gaza, no longer home to Israeli settlers, falls outside the scope of a boycott of West Bank products.

  • Possible targets of a smart boycott might include - G4S, which supplies equipment for Israeli prisons and checkpoints.
  • J C Bamford, which supplies JCB bulldozers for the Israeli army, for home demolitions.
  • Ahava cosmetic products, manufactured in the West Bank.
  • Hewlett Packard which supplies surveillance equipment to the Israeli Government in support of the occupation of the West Bank.

In the UK "smart" boycotts have been pioneered by Jews for Justice for Palestinians.
