The Status Quo

The Occupation costs Israel dearly:

  • It costs the lives of teenage Israeli conscripts.
  • It costs economically: military security is not cheap.
  • It costs politically: nations throughout the world condemn the Israeli settlements.
Despite this, mainstream Israeli politicians seem to see no alternative to the Status Quo, which involves:
  • Withdrawal from peace negotiations.
  • Creeping annexation of Palestinian land.
  • Extension of the Separation Wall.
  • Continuing Palestinian opposition.
  • Refugees' resentment.

Many no longer believe that a peaceful solution is possible, and accept the Status Quo as the least-bad option. Frankly it seems to satisfy the Israelis' perceived need for military security, and permits controlled expansion of settlements.

This would mean that talk of one-state or two-state solutions is an illusion.
