 | Why do most people, inside and outside Israel-Palestine, support a Two-State Solution?-
In surveys held regularly since 2000, a Two-State Solution has been supported in principle by 55 to 70 per cent of Israeli Jews, and by 50+ to 60 per cent of Palestinians in the Occupied Territories.
-
The Two-State Solution meets the complementary aspirations of Zionists, who long for a Jewish State, and of Palestinians who seek self-determination.
-
Despite right-wing pressure the Israeli government remains nominally committed to a Two-State Solution.
-
Despite earlier refusals to countenance the State of Israel, both Fatah in 1988, and Hamas in their modified Charter in 2017, have implicitely accepted the continued existence of the Israeli State.
-
The Arab Peace Initiative, endorsed by surrounding states, supported the Two-State Solution.
-
Continued financial support by the UK Government and others has simply propped up an unsustainable situation. It has reduced the cost to Israel, as the occupying power, of running the Occupied Territories. We therefore have an economic interest in effective Palestinian self-government.
