Giotto: Jesus cleansing the Temple
|
According to the New Testament, Jesus' parents brought him to the Temple in Jerusalem as a baby. He returned as a boy and debated theology with scholars "in my Father's House", as he told his anxious parents. Later he chased the money-changers from the Temple courts.
After the crucifixion the apostles taught regularly in the Temple courtyard, healing sick people in "Solomon's porch" (Acts 5:16). It was in the Temple that Paul had a vision of Jesus (Acts 22:17).
Although Jesus had been closely associated with the Temple Mount, early Christians gradually separated themselves from Temple worship. They viewed the destruction of the Temple in 70 AD as a fulfillment of prophesy and as a divine punishment for the sins of the Jewish people. Describing the New Jerusalem, Revelation 21:22 says "I saw no temple therein".
