On 14 July 2017 three "Israeli Arabs", using weapons concealed in the Temple Mount, killed two Israeli (Druze) Border Police. The attackers were immediately shot dead.
The Israelis closed the Temple Mount for two days and installed metal detectors at entrances to the Temple Mount, despite the "Status Quo" Agreement (signed under the 1994 peace pact with Jordan) which affirmed Jordan as the custodian of the Temple Mount on behalf of the Islamic Wafq.
Palestinians refused to enter the Temple Mount and gathered in large numbers to pray outside. Israel then removed the metal detectors and installed "smart" surveillance cameras. The Palestinians remained adamant. Next the Israelis prepared to revert to individual body searches; these would have been impossible to implement for thousands of Muslim worshippers. Finally the Israelis withdrew all restrictions on Palestinian entry to the Temple Mount.
Jubiliant Palestinians returned in triumph to the Temple Mount.
