Ultimately there is no such thing as Military Security. Despite this one can understand why many Israelis stress their need for security - from suicide bombers, from Hamas rockets and from Iranian nuclear ambitions.
Many Israelis are Holocaust survivors, or the children or grandchildren of Holocaust survivors. They read about the resurgence of antisemitism in Europe and it feels to them like the situation in Germany just before Hitler came to power.
Israelis believe, understandably, that Israel's survival has been due to the Israel Army. "We have only to lose one war and Israel will be wiped off the map".
British Jews generally recognise that oppressive Israeli policies have contributed to the growth of antisemitism, but many Israelis fail to distinguish between anti-Zionism and antisemitism. This insecurity makes Israelis fearful of abandoning the occupation of the West Bank. This is reflected in the Israeli negotiating position.
Does the Quaker boycott fuel their fears? What would offset these fears?
Should we consider alternative or additional Quaker initiatives, such as a phased withdrawal from the West Bank?
